KOS × Night Dragon

When I set out to make a KOS × Night Dragon cross, I wanted to create something I would personally fall in love with.

For the KOS parent, I sought out one of the best examples I could find, a plant that came directly from HU in Indonesia. I have a lot of respect for HU and the work he has done for the Anthurium community, so being able to use his genetics in this project made the cross even more meaningful to me.

The idea was to take the traits I love about KOS and combine them with the genetics of Night Dragon, then select hard for the characteristics I want to carry forward.

From KOS, I’m looking to preserve the cupping of the leaf, thick margins, and overall leaf shape. From Night Dragon, I’m selecting for bullate texture, persistent red venation, and the darker expressions.

The goal isn’t simply to see traits from both parents it’s to find individuals where those traits come together in the right proportions.

As this batch develops, I’m already seeing seedlings that make me excited about the potential of the cross. There’s a lot of variation to work through, but some of the combinations of shape, texture, margins, color, and venation are exactly the direction I was hoping for.

Unfortunately, I haven’t seen any variegation in the batch so far.

But honestly, when they’re coming out this nice, I don’t really care.

For me, the value of this cross was never dependent on variegation. It was about building a plant I wanted to grow taking recognizable traits from two parents with very different strengths and seeing if I could create something that feels like its own expression.

HU × Night Dragon has a lot of potential, and I’m very happy with the direction these are heading.
