Carla JD03 — Refining Genetics Through Self-Pollination

Some breeding projects are about creating something new. Others are about preserving and strengthening something already exceptional. Carla JD03 was created with the second goal in mind.

JD03 is a self-pollination of my Round × GPH001 Carla, a plant with exceptional characteristics that I wanted to explore further through breeding.

The mother comes from the Venetian Carla lineage, connected to @gayplantheaux and @granthuriums. This is a lineage that has become an important part of my breeding program at Anthurium Story.

With JD03, I wasn’t interested in introducing another plant’s genetics. I wanted to see what would happen if I took the characteristics I already loved about this particular Carla and brought them together through self-pollination.

The goal was to push the mother’s genetics to their extremes.

Selfing can be an interesting tool in breeding. It allows recessive traits to emerge, creates new combinations of existing genes, and sometimes produces expressions that weren’t obvious in the original parent. Of course, it can also reveal undesirable characteristics. That’s part of the process, and why selection matters so much.

With JD03, I’m looking for exceptional darkness, beautiful structure, distinctive venation, and those subtle characteristics that make a truly special Carla stand apart from the rest.

What excites me most about a project like this is the possibility of finding seedlings that express certain characteristics even more strongly than their mother. Not every seedling will be a winner, and that’s never the expectation. The goal is to identify the exceptional individuals worth carrying forward into future generations.

Carla JD03 represents another piece of my long-term vision for Carla breeding: understanding the genetics, respecting the lineage, and making every generation count.

These aren’t just seedlings to me. They’re an opportunity to learn what this particular Carla has hidden within her genetics and how those traits might be carried into the future.

Every Anthurium has a story. JD03 is about discovering what’s already written in its DNA.
