BVEP x Night Dragon JD001

A Long Awaited Cross: BVEP × Night Dragon

Some crosses carry more weight than others, and this one has been sitting in my mind and heart for quite some time. After two earlier attempts that ended in abortion, I finally have the chance to share with the community a pairing I’ve been dreaming about: the OG1 BVEP from Schott Cohen crossed with the RA1 BVEP from Rory, paired with none other than the legendary Night Dragon.

Why This Cross Matters

In my opinion, OG1 and RA1 are among the very best BVEPs—OG1 with its remarkable form and presence, RA1 with its undeniable vigor and character. But it’s the father of this cross, Night Dragon, that elevates it into something truly special.

Night Dragon is not just another plant—it’s a name that carries mystery and weight in the anthurium world. For years, it was nearly impossible to obtain. In fact, when I acquired mine, it had to be shipped under wraps, hidden at the bottom of a crate of 30 other species so it could slip by inspection without being intercepted. That moment, when it finally arrived safely in the U.S., is still one of the most powerful and emotional experiences of my plant journey.

To have the chance now to use Night Dragon in breeding—especially with BVEPs of this caliber—feels like closing the circle on years of patience, planning, and persistence.

The Vision Behind the Cross

My dream for this project has always been simple but powerful: a BVEP with striking red veins. That dramatic flash of color against dark, elegant foliage has always been my vision. And if there’s one father that could bring that vision to life, it’s Night Dragon—renowned for its vein expression and strength.

This is the first time I’ve ever done this cross, and after two failed attempts, seeing it finally succeed is more than just a breeding milestone it’s a personal one.

Tracking the Lineage

This batch will carry the identifier JD001, marking it as the inaugural generation of this BVEP × Night Dragon pairing. And importantly, this won’t be repeated with the same exact plants. Each parent OG1, RA1, and Night Dragon represents a specific, irreplaceable moment in time.

That makes this first batch truly one-of-a-kind.

Looking Ahead

What excites me most is not just the potential for bold red veins, powerful structure, and unique expression, but also the chance to see these seedlings become part of the community’s collections.

These plants are living proof of patience and persistence, but they’re also part of something bigger: a shared story. A story that started with secret shipments, a dream of red veins, and BVEPs chosen with care and that will continue as these seedlings grow and flourish in the hands of collectors around the world.

Here’s to the next chapter of BVEP—written with Night Dragon’s legacy, and carried forward by the community
